One Green-‘Being an Individual’

We were inspired by Alberto Giacometti’s sculptures. Giacometti was a Swiss sculptor.

 In pairs, we planned what our sculptures would look like. Each of the children made an individual pose while the other child created the sculpture out of pipe cleaners. 

 

We stapled their sculpture to a piece of square cardboard.

Then the children used tiny pieces of papier mache to cover their design.

After they had dried the children painted them in silver.

We loved that they all looked different!

Our Sculpture Mentor

Walangari Karntawarra
We have been fortunate to work with Walangari Karntawarra as a mentor this year. Walangari is an Aboriginal elder and an award winning contemporary artist from the Western Desert. Walangari exhibits works in acrylics as well as creating magnificent sand sculptures. His work has been exhibited extensively both in Australia and internationally.
Walangari joined us for our Year One Astronomy Night adding a fabulous element of indigenous stories relating to what we see in the sky. The teachers have spent time with him learning about indigenous art and culture. 
All the students will be participating in producing a sand sculpture with Walangari, that will become the centre of our exhibition, and learn about indigenous cultural beliefs and the cyclic elements of nature and the spirituality of the Dreamtime.

Books About Sculpture

There are so many resources available to teachers now, with the internet, pinterest, great art blogs etc but don't forget the old way - Books!

There are so many titles around now that can inspire us, put them in a learning centre with materials and see what the students create!

First we started with a shape of a bird.

Next we made the eye from a wooden button.

For the feathers we threaded some beads onto colourful wire.

 We started with a wooden peg and the carefully covered it with some pattern paper.

  

 Next we curled colourful wire to make the antennas.
 

After that we painted some white tissue paper with watercolours to make the wings.

Finally, we pegged them to a vase full of sticks from our playground.

Sculptural Trees made out of Recycled Paper 

We began by cutting newspaper into strips about 15cm wide. We dipped the strips in water that had glue mixed in, and let them soak for a few minutes then removed them from the water and let them drip.

Then, we started from one corner, begin twisting the strips tightly.

We had to help each other with this.

We had to do this 15 times to make enough to make one tree. We put the strips into a bundle and tied it together, then began arranging the roots and branches in place. Then we had to wait until they dried. Drying took a good 48 hours.  After they dried, we just glued them together.

Then it was time to start applying the leaves. We lightly flattened paper rolls and cut them into 1cm strips. We stuck the leaves to the branches in a random pattern, making sure it looked like a tree.
